I’m doing R&D on inventory dimension group. I want to know, when we change the dimension group for an item, what effects does it have on the previous and new transactions ?

I suggest you sit with Developer and ask him that when you post any document with dimension group what are all the tables effecting and whether the dimension group is updating there or not ?
You cannot change the dimension group on an item without impacting on trasactions etc. This will potentially mess things up for you. Create a new item to reflect the R&D nature of the item.
