Is there any consequences of changing item dimension group for already existing item transaction in dynamics AX.

I have requirement for to add location and serial number additional dimension to existing item dimension group. I tried to add the group but its not allowing me to add new dimension e.g. location

serial number etc…

Its fetching error: No dimensions group setup can be changed when transactions exist that use this setup unless the dimension group for an item is changed.

I tried to remove existing dimension group and attached to new dimension group which has both diminsion e.g. location, warehouse and serial number. Its accepting without error.

My quires is

  1. How Can I change dimension on mass level for all items?

  2. Is any finanacial impact on changing dimension group?

  3. Is any consequences after changing the dimension group?

Experts please guide with your openion and suggestions.

You should create new items is the advice from Microsoft. You might want to try removing all stock and every transaction (SO, PO, TO, WO etc) and then changing the group and putting all the stock and transactions back. It is not something you can easily change because all transactions and logic are captured at the time of entry.

You should 100% not do this through the backend and force the change without knowing the consequences and fully testing in test. Even the above process of removing everything (which I think used to work) needs to be tested before application to live.

In answer to your questions

  1. You cannot. Critical field to be managed with due care and attention.

  2. Yes depending upon costing method and dimension group configuration.

  3. Not if done properly. Many if hacked.
