Axapta 3.0 +SP5 Upgrade to MS Dynamics AX 2009

Hello

We are planning to upgrade Axapta 3.0+SP5 to MS Dynamics AX 2009. Currently Oracle 9i is used as back end database. We are running only financial modules. I have following question :-

§ How difficult to migrate Axapta data from Oracle backend to MS SQL Server.

§ Is data encryption supported in MS Dynamics at database level.

§ What are the BI tools being used for reporting data from MS Dynamics. We use Business Objects for BI, can this be easily integrated with MSDynamics.

§ Will Microsoft support Oracle database going forward.

Thanks in advance.

Imran

Hi Imran,

  1. MS have invested a lot in improving user experience in upgradation projects. Technically it should be feasible to upgrade from Ax 3.0, 40 to Ax 2009 irrespective of back end. For more info, refer to this white paper - https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=d9dae144-55b4-432d-b11e-f65ddb2d1b9c

Also you might want to check 3rd party tool for code migration from a company called ‘Migrax’. This product was very recently released to the market (in Convergence 2009). For more info, check their website - http://www.migrax2009.com/

  2. To my knowledge data encryption is not supported or provided.

  3. MS provide wide spectrum of BI capability vis-a-vis with MS Dynamics Ax 2009. By default, DAX 2009 is capable of integrating with all offerings from MS BI stack. Additionally there are some 3rd party add-ins are also available. For more info, refer this white paper - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=94e5246e-50b5-45c7-b679-5a92193d3ad6&displaylang=en

  4. I have not seen announcement anything to the contrary so far.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the update.

One quick question, does Microsoft provide database structure details i.e. what database table hold what information.

Imran

Hi Imran,

Only recently MS came up with data model information covering key Ax tables across the product. I have uploaded this document here -http://dynamicsuser.net/media/p/141708.aspx

Please note this document is for Ax 4.0. At the time of writing this, there is no such document available for Ax 2009.

Regards,

Hi Harish

Thanks for the help
