Keep lookup form open

Hello,

I have a custom lookup form that has a left and a right group. The left is a list of item groups and then depending on what is selected, the right side displays items in that group. I want to have the lookup close only when someone selects an item on the right side. The problem is the form is also closing when they select a group on the left side. How can I keep the form open when they are clicking on the items groups (left side)?
