What is a good reporting tool for Finance in D365 f&o

What is a good reporting tool for Finance in D365 f&o to look at all the finance data comprehensively ?

The best reporting tool for finance in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O) depends on your needs, but a combination of tools is often ideal. For core financial statements like balance sheets and P&L reports, the built-in Financial Reporter (Management Reporter) is widely used and deeply integrated with the General Ledger. For interactive dashboards and advanced visualizations across both financial and operational data, Power BI is highly effective, especially when connected via Azure Data Lake or BYOD. Finance users also benefit from the Excel add-in, which allows for real-time, ad-hoc analysis of transactional data in a familiar format. Together, these tools provide a comprehensive view of financial performance and support both strategic and operational decision-making.

If you’re looking for something more Excel-friendly, Jet Reports or Atlas might be worth a look. Jet works well with OData for quick access to finance data without too much setup. Atlas is great if you’re dealing with multiple companies or complex dimensions, finance teams usually pick it up fast.

Not a replacement for Power BI, but a solid add-on if you want more flexibility inside Excel.

We are looking for a tool that can do all encompassing Financial reporting using the data from D365. Not excel based.

Thanks

Has anyone used Solver? We are presently looking into this as an option for both Reporting (standard and customized), and Planning & Analysis.

Hi Suparna,

For comprehensive, non-Excel financial reporting in D365 F&O, the strategic standard is the Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI).

To handle all finance data and ensure performance, the best approach is using the Azure Synapse Link (Data Lake) to feed Power BI. This gives you high-speed, dynamic, custom reports.

If you want to dive deeper into the technical architecture, we’d be happy to host a quick, free knowledge-sharing call/workshop!

Hi Natasha,

Yes, Solver is a very popular, dedicated Corporate Performance Management (CPM) tool for D365 F&O users.

It excels at specific FP&A processes like Budgeting, Forecasting, and Planning & Analysis (P&A) workflows, which is where it usually outperforms pure Power BI. If your goal goes beyond just reporting, it’s definitely worth a close look!

If you’re comparing Solver against other tools, we welcome a quick, free knowledge-sharing call/workshop to discuss your P&A requirements!

Hi Hardik,

We are also looking into Vena Solutions. Do you have knowledge of this product? We need to compare three options per our policies to make a decision on a larger purchase/investment. The third option is to not implement any FP&A software, but handle it with OData links and Excel.

Thank you,

Natasha

Hi @Natasha_Botke

Yes, we have implemented and used Vena Solutions for several of our clients. If you’d like, we can connect over a meeting to walk you through multiple options and alternatives to Vena, outlining the pros and cons, along with industry examples where different approaches have been used to address similar requirements.

Built in standard Financial Reports are best for financial reporting (the old Management Reporter framework. It is actually very similar to for example Oracle Financial Statements Generator. You should only need add-on tools for visualization and data mashup, but you can use PowerBI for that.

I encourage this toolset, because auditors like that it is built-in and requires less effort to audit and verify results. You can drill down to source journals and transactions. It’s quite powerful.

If you have more complex operational reporting needs, the underlying data views are where the work goes. You could and should verify that standard doesn’t meet your needs before turning to outside tools for additional cost.
