After Microsoft Business Solutions recent rename of Attain to Navision it has become more difficult to be a Navision user. And why is that? Navision is not just the new name of the product formerly known as Attain and Financials (PFKAAAT)[:D] It’s also the name of the old character based DOS and OS/2 product that most of us know as Navision 3.x (the last version was 3.56). The product that in the US was called AVISTA and FJORDIN (as far as I remember) on Iceland. It also used to be called Navigator - it was even sold as IBM-Navigator in Denmark, back when IBM Denmark was the distributor in Denmark (it even came in a BLUE IBM box). In Navision terms it is also know as N3. Although the development was stopped several years ago then Microsoft Business Solutions just recently announced that they will stop the support of the product by the end of 2003, but that doesn’t mean that we will stop supporting it here on this website. Here on this website we have another problem. Many members are not totally familiar with the fact that there are two products called Navision. Therefor many users are posting to the WRONG FORUM’s. Lately the Navision 3.x/N3 fora has been receiving many wrong postings and I’m spending lots of time “cleaning up” these postings. Therefor I will ask all of you the stop and read the forum descriptions before you post your topic. If that’s not enough then take a look at the existing topics in the forum and see if they match your topic.
Hi Erik, I feel something regarding Postings into wrong forum. Its only my thinking, but others can contribute if they think same way or otherwise. Take for example name of one forum: Financials / Attain / Attain/Financials - eCommerce and Internet I feel that the name is long for users to catch their attention, the human tendency is to stop/discontinue reading if a sentence is long and never forget that most of the contributors are in a hurry to post their question(I have seen this happenning even with old timers). My Suggestion: Can we have names like the following : Navision - eCommerce and Internet Issues Axapta - Development/Technical Issues You may argue that these sentences aren’t very short indeed, but to me atleast seem more easily comprehendible. We can remove that word ‘Issues’ from my suggestion, but I felt that its leading and required. We have check out how others feel. What do you say friends.[:D]
Hey Mohammad Didn’t you catch my message? And how should the suggested names make it better? Today we have categories for each product and then again the fora. To make it easier and to make mistakes less likely we changed the names as they are now. So several places where it’s listing the fora then it also show the names. I’m a little reluctand in renaming Financials/Attain to just Navision, because of the fact that we have both the old and the new Navision. And also because the namechange is not world wide yet. Additionally I think we will continue to use both names as well as Navision the same way as we have keept Financials. But one thing is sure. Everyone should still read the descriptions and look at the other postings. It’s just like driving a car - you have to learn the traffic rules before you get started. It’s not enough that you can drive.
I think that Microsoft should call them Microsoft Financials, Microsoft Attain, and Microsoft Axapta. And we would call them in turn MS Financials, Attain, and Axapta… The old names(Navision, Attain, and Axapta) have been chosen by us based on how we talk about them in everyday language. We call “Navision Financials” Navision, because calling it only “Financials” would confuse accountants. When Attain came, we couldn’t call Navision, because it’s already in use, so we called it Attain. Because Microsoft officials in their negotiations used the word Navision everyday, it became stuck in their memory and chose to use it.

Hm, I call “Navision” the Dos based Navision version (because I am with this product since more then 10 years), “Financials” Navision Financials etc. However, who cares about accountants? Regards Walter

A lot of us. Especially those of us who also sell the product. I actually found it more a problem that it was called Financials, when talking to non-accountants. I.e. if you were trying to sell to a hardcore manufacture or a retail shop. The non-functional name is much better. As you, I’ve been working with the old Navision product for ages (since 1990) and I agree that it would have been easier to simply keep it this way. But since Microsoft changed the names then we have to do so. Otherwise I would request that you volonteer as a moderator of the Navision N3 foras [;)] - because LOTS of wrong topics will have to be moved, more every day then NEW Navision name gets out there…

OK. As the names are the names as they are right now (because of Microsoft), we should use this naming. I suggest to rename the N3 foras to “Old Dos based Version of Navision N3” and use the “Navision” name for the Attain product. Erik, beleive me, I do NOT want to move all the wrong posting to the correct foras. So, no volonteer job for me.
A change for the good is always preferable. Sometimes we have to accept change whether we like or not like Microsoft acquisition of the then Navision A/s. Erik I understand your point regarding the “car” example, but think that clear dividers, notice boards etc. help the drivers better. [;)]
