I have read the upgrade toolkit documentation but I am still apprehensive about the upgrade from 2.6 to 3.7 I have been instructed to perform a DATA upgrade only. ALL objects will be recustomised in the 3.7 version because merging objects apparantly is a very dangerous route to take. I must add the fields added in 2.6 to the 3.7 tables. This will ensure that the tables have the correct structure. I will then export these objects before continuing with the steps indicated below. My main concern is importing the 2.6 objects into the 3.7 database and the effect this is going to have on the 3.7 database. Below are the steps I have identified that need to be done to achieve a successfull upgrade. 1. Backup the Customer’s objects and data separately. 2. Restore the Customer’s objects into the 3.7 database thereby overwriting the 3.7 objects. 3. Restore the Customer’s data into the 3.7 database. 4. Import the necessary fob files that will move the data to the correct tables. e.g. take some Item Ledger Entry data and move that into the Value Entry table which was not overwritten when the 2.6 objects were restored. 5. Backup the data once all the necessary fob files have been run. 6. Restore the objects I exported after I had amended the table structures in the original 3.7 database (before point 1), into a second 3.7 database. 7. Restore the data into the second 3.7 database. Can anyone please let me know if this will actually work. Is there anything I have left out? I have very little time to implement this upgrade and because I have to re-customise all remaining objects in 3.7, I cannot afford to spend too much time on the data upgrade itself. One other note: I understand that the REMID tool is used to remove the ID’s of variables and text constants. But what happens to them if they have no ID? Do I need this to perform the above steps. I would appreciate any input I can get. DavidT
Hi David, having very few time for an Update is not a very good start
If you do it for the first time, then do it at least one time for a test. You should follow the doc in the upgrade-toolkit step by step. When i did my last update (2.60->3.60) it worked quite well. If you want to transfer all changes by hand, then there should be no problem with the IDs. Follow the 18 ? steps in the doc … (1.) One complete backup of the whole database is enough. You don’t have to do it in 2 steps. (2.) No problem, because you restore your backup into an EMPTY 3.70 database. This means you don’t overwrite any objects. Step 2. and 3. is one step, as you restore the whole backup. (3.) import the upgrade-fobs … Then there is a step with deleting some old data. Delete all objects except tables. Importing 3.60 objects with the grade of customization you want to have after the upgrade. … etc … Like is said - it is explained very well in the docs / and i’m afraid do not remember correctly the whole process
Good luck
And you should make sure that you have the latest version of the upgrade toolkit. there has been a hotfix for 3.60/3.70 recently to fix some issues
Thanks alot Richard for your input; it has helped me re-think the process I should follow. Could you or Beaver please let me know where I can find the latest hotfixes to 3.7 Upgrade Toolkit. I have looked at the Micrsoft PartnerGuide, PartnerSource and Webfolders.Navision.Com but I cannot find any downloads. There is only documentation available at the PartnerSource.
