I’m new to F&O, used to work with Nav/ Business Central for years. Now I started off in a F&O project where all reports are developed via SSRS. The reports mostly relate to functionality of an ISV for Logistics Service Providers, but also to standard F&O.
The project is currently on hold, as there is a discussion whether SSRS would be the correct toolset to use, as Electronic Reporting & Configurable Business Documents (CBD) are promoted by MS.
My questions:
- Will SSRS reporting in F&O be discontinued? When? Is there a clear roadmap?
- Can ER and CBD handle complex logic? Conditional showing information, repeating blocks in several levels etc?
Can someone help me with this?
Thx
Martijn
I’m not aware of any discontinuation, but it’s true that the focus moves to other technologies. One of the most important ones isn’t even mentioned in your list: Power BI.
Note that none solution is meant to cover all scenarios. Some are better for external reports (where SSRS has its role), some for analytical report, some for quick ad-hoc reports created by end-users and so on. Create reporting solutions gives you a brief overview of some of the options (not all).
Hi Martin,
Thx for your quick reply. Very helpful. In the link that you provided, I notice that electronic reporting is mentioned as a seperate topic, not the same topic as SSRS. Although I feel that there might be an overlap with SSRS. Some equivalents for SSRS reports seem to be available in ER as well, it seems?
The advantages of the ER / CBD are clearly that it is configuration, no development and perhaps also other data sources than F&O could be used? But the limitations are not clear for me.
In the SSRS topic, following advantages are mentioned for SSRS:
" * Built-in back office document management capabilities including email support, scheduled executions via Batch, and Print Archive
- Parameterized views with drill-through navigations to forms and other reports
- Used to produce precision documents for compliance with local regulatory business practices"
Does this mean that these topics are not covered (yet) be ER / CBD?
Can I find a list with the limitations for ER/CBD somewhere?
Regarding precision design, I think that Work/Excel (CBD) can be used to meet many requirements. But they’re not intended for too much precision, therefore you may sometimes run to limits that will ask either for complicated workarounds or a different tool.
Drill-though navigation is achievable with hyperlinks.
Email is a destination supported by ER.
Hi Martijn,
