Hello everyone,
I have the following problem:
I purchased Item X with Serial A for $10 and Serial B for $20.
When I try to sell Serial B:
- The “Unit Cost” on the sales order line shows $15 (average cost) instead of $20.
- In the “Item Ledger Entries”:
- For the entry type = Purchase, the “Cost Amount (Actual)” is $20 (correct).
- For the entry type = Sale, the “Cost Amount (Actual)” is $15 (incorrect).
Do you have any idea what could be causing this issue?
Thanks!
Hey - Why do you think its incorrect, Costing is average and it’s behaving as per it, if you want the unit cost to be $20 just because you sold serial b then you should be using costing method as specific.
Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
Of course this problem is occuring while I’m using a “Specific” as “Costing Method”.
Yes, COGS should follow the tracking code assigned for the specific costing method. If a serial number isn’t attached, then system cannot determine the cost, and the Cost Amount (Actual) will be incorrect. That’s the only possibility I can think of at the moment. Try checking one more transaction to confirm.
Hi,
Sorry for the delay.
Unfortunately, I tested again, but the same issue persists (see the following images).
Thanks again for your support.
OK understood. System is behaving absolutely fine.
In Specific costing, ignore the Unit Cost on the Item Card . The true cost lives at the ILE level , tied to the serial/lot number. Unit cost on the item card cannot reflect exact as its specific as compared to other costing methods. Unit on the Item card will show you the last cost or the default cost setup which you have manually entered.

Hello,
The unit cost will always show the weighted average cost of the quantities on hand. However, if Specific costing method is being used, the cost posted on the transactions will be calculated based on the SN selected. You would see entries posted at the average cost and additional entries posted to adjust the average cost to the specific one corresponding to the SN selected.
In your example, the SO line shows the average unit cost =$250k. If you select the SN that costed $200k on the item tracking lines, you will see one entry for COGS at $250k (average cost) and an additional entry for -$50k to adjust the cost down to the SN’s cost.
