Software Licensing Management with NAV

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone is using NAV for software licensing management. Is NAV a good solution for this? If so, what could you recommend in terms of customization.

HOW do you intend to use Navision --or any other ERP system-- for SW licensing management? Describe more in detail your idea - otherwise I simply can’t understand how Navision can be used for such purpose…

Well I could think of a reason.

If you are turning the table and looking at software licensing management from a different angle than normally. Imagine that you created the software and now you are selling it via Navision. Well then is software licensing management really not much different from managing serial numbers…

But traditionally then software licensing management is not exactly that. Maybe it is, we don’t know until Mitra tells us! [:)]

Thank you for your posts. Well we want to have automated actication of our software when customers install it. Or do the same thing by phone. But we also want to be able to connect to these customers later with updates or marketing material. My first thought was to set up a virtual inventory of software, which would be as Erik said a bunch of serial numbers. I am just really looking to see how others have done this and what problems they have encountered and whether NAV is the best practice. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Mitra

You might look towards Service module and its functionality - but this module is additional (bought separately for additional cost) to BRL-AM license and not available at all with BRL-BE license…

So you must decide first, is it reasonable for your business to buy these extra granules or look for some simpler (less expensive?) workaround.

For this part you will need to develop something - but this is usually done thru website, it’s not a task for Navision…

THIS could generally be done using Service module on regular basis - but again, different solutions already exist, more suited for this purpose. What infrastructure you already have? How do you deliver your software - is it dowloadable from website? In that case it will be easier to implement upgrading offers etc etc there…

What I said earlier, is that partially processes in question MIGHT be done with Navision, as you can program almost everything, but you know your situation and already available solutions/infrastructure better, so it’s up to you to decide how to gain your goals with less effort and expenses…
