Reservations & Marking

Can someone describe these features to me? We are having issues with this in our implementation of ax 2012 as it seems new production orders are reserving their materials and then purchase receipts cannot be completed due to the reservation.

Also, when removing the reservation I see that there is often a ‘marking’ for the same quantity that was previously reserved that I have to remove to allow purchase orders to be received.

Any info or insight into these functions is greatly appreciated.

Reservations reserve stock, marking marks the costs.

The information given is not enough, there is a reservation setup in production, when you update to a status it reserves as per the parameter. The marking may depend upon the explosion of the orders.

You would need to explain why a purchase receipt cannot be processed due to a reservation.

Pardon on the description, I meant inventory transfers and not purchase receipts. Too much going on today

We are talking about in the inventory transactions, if you select an item and click on Reservation and seeing where it is reserved to - usually a prod order but it could also be to a project.

We have turned all reservation in production control to manual, and all employees were instructed not to perform manual reservations as it is not necessary, we simply need quantities available for all use and not being reserved as this can interrupt another groups’ consumption of the materials. First come, first served, for now.

We did see in the MRP module that in the parameters for update, there is a Update Marking setting to Standard when firming orders. We have set this to ‘No’ to see if the marking of orders is causing reservations to be generated as well.

Essentially, we are seeing that master planning will have an order for 1 unit of item A. Item A requires 100 units of item B in it’s BOM.

When the planned production order is firmed, the inventory transactions for item B show 100 on order to the prod order, and 100 reserved order to that order. Then when the 100 units arrive of item B, someone will try to do a transfer but the 100 are not available to be moved as they are reserved physical. This should not happen.

When you start production if you start it and define the picking list it will reserve the stock because it has been started - this is the first come forst served. It depends upon what you are doing - perhaps you should firm to released, or change your starting parameters - depends what you are trying to achieve.

Correct.

Ah I see, so once the order is in a started status, the materials that are called out on the pick list are in-effect reserved.

Is there a way to disable this feature, or is in just inherent of what AX is trying to accomplish?

Also, we are now firming to a Released status, so I will confirm that these reservations are only on started orders, and not those that are simply in a released status.

I have created a production order, released it, started it and saw the pick list was generated. I went to the item itself and there was no reservation, just shows on order.

You have no stock based upon the dimensions defined on the pick list. If there was a PO and you reserved ordered items it would be reserve ordered, rather than reserved physical, but you have not set this or do not have it so it is simply on order.
