Questions about changing to lot specific tracking and Item reclass. journal

Hi! Experts :

I have 2 question about lot tracking :

  1. I want to change lot tracking to lot specific tracking in live database. I know if there are transation entries (posted document and ledger entries) in the database, I can’t just check the “lot specific tracking” in the item tracking code and can’t change the item tracking code in the item card. What can I do other than create a new database?

  2. In the Navision Help, it says if I want to change the lot no. of inventory I can use Item Reclass. Journal. But when I use it to change lot number, I always tell me the location code can’t be the same. I just wanna change only the lot number in same location. Can I do that?

Thanks for your help.

The last time I remember doing something like that I had to create new items. This was the suggestion from Microsoft, but it was a version or two ago that I did it. Haven’t looked into doing it in 5 or 2009.

Actually, I know the Microsoft suggestion as well. The reason why I don’t want to use it is the item no we are using is also used by EDI.

The EDI setup uses the item no to receive customer’s requirement and send ASN to customer. If we change the item no.,we have to customize our EDI to use like item cross reference as item no to communicate to our customer. It’s kind of troublesome. So I just try to see if anyone has other suggestions.

Thank for your reply.

Andy,

You may change ItemNo… [:D]

  • First, change existing ItemNo from 123ZQ to, say 123ZQ-OLD.
  • Second, create new Item with the “old” number - 123ZQ, but with appropriate tracking setup.
  • Now you can transfer stock to “new” Item, but ItemNo will be as it was, no change for your EDI system.

But bear in mind, that changing ItemNo (or any other Card’s No) can take LOOOONG time - as Navision will run through all the tables, where this No is mentioned and update existing records. If Item in question has had many transactions, all Inventory-related tables, all PO/SO will be updated and many more…

Anyway, try first in non-production DB !!!

Regarding Locations in Reclass.journal - leave them BLANK, as you don’t need to change them, then Navision will not pop up the message. It doesn’t like that they are equal.

…OK… It seems all right. (Why I didn’t think of this way… I feel I’m stupid.)

But there are other related issues after the changes.

  1. When you change the item No. to 123ZQ-OLD, the accounting related ledger entries will be changed as well?
  2. After I transfer stock to new item, I need to use item journal to nagtive adjust the old item inventory to zero. right?
  3. Do I need to recreate all the SOs and POs which have not posted anything?
  4. How about the SOs and POs which have posted shipment or receive but not invoice?
  5. So my item list will be doubled up! Can I delete the old item card? Or a good way to properly manage my boubled items…?

Anyway… I’ll try this out. These are just questions in my head for further discussion when I see the solution.

Thank you, Modris.
