Production Order component location defaults

Hi BC gurus,
We need a bit of help with setting the defaults for production order components via routing link codes.

We have 3 locations set up, each location has a single BIN.
Location and BIN are set to mandatory
SKUs are set up for all items in all locations
Locations have warehouse receipt and ship enabled, but not directed pick and putaway.
Work Centres and Machine Centres used in the Routings all have locations set, with from-production, to-production, and open shop floor bins set correctly.
The Production BOMs and Routings are set up with Routing Link Codes to determine where and when the materials will be consumed - all components are set to backflush at the moment.

Sales Orders are set to show the location the inventory will be dispatched from.

Production takes place across multiple locations, with items being moved as WIP between locations. The items are fabricated in one location, then they’re sent for galvanisation as a subcontracted operation, and then they are receipted back for final assembly and/or paint at the dispatch location. Items are not output to inventory after each operation, they are still in WIP.

Production orders are created from Sales Orders as a Firm Planned Project Order, which inherits the location value from the Sales Order line. The Project production orders are nested to include all items required for the demand on the sales order - all items not already in stock are manufactured to order.
The production order location (inherited from the SO) is applied to the Prod. Order lines, and sets the default location for the components - which is usually incorrect.

We need to set the Prod Order Component locations to be set to the location used by the routing operation work centre location - the documentation implies this will work, however it inherits the location from the Sales Order location only.

What we need to happen, is that the component locations are set to the routing link code location as the production order is created.

So as the production order is created from the Sales Order Planning page, it should set the location of the components, based on the routing link codes in the Production BOM and Routing.

Am I missing something basic here, or does this need to be customised to operate in this way?

I asked a related question here - and had great help from Ben Baxter, but I am clearly missing something in my setup.

Hamish,
Thank you for the kind words. The only thing I can think could be causing the issue is creating the Prod. Order from the Sales Order.

Based on everything you described, you should be able to set your Finished Good to be Reordering Policy “Order” with a Manufacturing Policy of “Make-to-Order”.

Set any components that are manufactured to “Make-to-Order” as well, if you want them to nest on the same Production Order as the parent. The Reordering Policy can vary on the sub-components but set it to “Order” if you want a 1:1 relationship.

Lastly, in Manufacturing Setup, make sure your “Components at Location” is blank.

Then create the Production Order by running the Planning Worksheet, which will suggest the Production Order creation for the Finished Good and any related sub-assemblies that are not in stock.

See if this creates your Production Order with the appropriate Locations for your Components.

Best Regards,
Ben Baxter
