Print of OMR-codes

Hi, for a large customer I have to print OMR-codes on the invoices. The OMR-codes are used for controlling the printshop and the machine for automatic enveloping. The OMR-codes is vertical lines that need to printed near to the left border. An optical scanner on the enveloping machine is the reading the vertical lines to put the pages into the right size of envelopes. Does anybody have experience with this? Regards Lars

well, if you know the lineno. where to print - use a single textbox control an place it in the right position, fill it with _______ (underscore) if lineno = what you want - else leave it blank…if you need to adjust the position, remember to remove snap to grid in reportdesigner…

If only it was that simple! We are doing an investigation as well - hi Lars - and it looks as though there are 2 options, based on the type of machine that the client decides to buy. If they go for the expensive machine you can get away with printing a mark, either a line or a bar code, on the first page of each collation. Easy. The other, cheaper, option involves us having to put lines at the top left or bottom right corner of each page. The lines have to be in the right position and at the right spacing, with some tolerance. There can’t be any horizontal lines above them in the top left corner, so OK there may be some minor reformatting required. The marks actually indicate whether a page is not the first or not the last, meaning that you have to know whether a page is the last. This is the main problem. I think we can do 2 passes, first using SAVEASHTML and counting the pages, the second time doing the actual printing. Our requirement is to print invoices, credits and statements and stuff them into the same envelope so there’s some work to be done on our side. The other complication is that the machines can’t put more than 5 pages in one envelope. Double siding is possible but those darned OMR marks will get even more complicated if we do this! I think I should say that we haven’t done this yet, it’s only at the proposal stage. I know we can print the reports in the right order, we can count pages, and we should be able to print lines on a page. Is there anyone else with experience of this who could give us some hints? Regards, Dan.

Hi all, About OMR, I made a lot of contracts where our customers where using those marks to send information to envelopers machines. Sometimes, we also had to put barcodes (3of9 or BC128) on the external margins to track documents through the printing machine (IBM) and enveloping machine (Kern2500 and Kern3000). Most of the time, we recommend using an external tool to do the job: (StreamWeaver, Papyrus, etc.). That kind of job can be very complex, but will usually save BIG amounts of money to the customer. Here is the kind of things you can do by using a document management tool:

  • Sort documents by Zip Code (allows to obtain reduces costs with the post center because everything is already sorted)
  • Group/match documents for the same customers (can merge 3 files including different documents, and group/match on the customer number)
  • Group documents going in the same area (save money for the same reasons
  • Breaks on document when more than X pages or more than Y lbs (some customers will generate a new document to put in a new envelope, and some will calculate the new price for the stamp and set those “big” envelopes appart using OMR marks)
  • Possibly reorder of the documents: (some enveloper machines will need the last page first)
  • Change the print mode: 1UP simplex, 2UP simplex, 1UP duplex, 2UP duplex
  • Insert or change of logos, pictures, etc.
  • Insert barcodes to send instructions to feed a tracking application
  • Insert OMR codes to send instructions to the enveloping machine
  • And the final touch: automatic insert of marketing documents, considering the profile of the person (age, sex, interests), the no of pages already in the envelope, and the other marketing already sent to the customer.
I worked for more than a year as a developer and team leader in this area, so if you need aditionnal information, feel free to contact me at dgodbout@adnm-grp.com Regards,

Hi, I your customer could be interested in a 3´ part product, LaserNet can solve your needs about OMR code, but also be extended to a full document management solution. You can read more about LaserNet under solutions/Add on offered, or you can visit www.efstech.dk. We could also arrange a web demo, so you can see how the integration and product works?
