Nothing To Handle - Breakbulk

We sometimes get NOTHING TO HANDLE messages or items simply do not appear on picks when there is sufficient available inventory. We have breakbulk turned on.

I have been told that this is a known issue, but cannot find anything about it online.

We’re running BC14 on Premise.

Hi Lewis.

I used CentralQ.ai to come up with this. May be a good starting point for troubleshooting.

The “NOTHING TO HANDLE” message in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central can occur for several reasons, even when there is sufficient inventory available. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue, especially in the context of breakbulk settings:

  1. Check Bin Codes: Ensure that the bin code selected for the warehouse shipment is correct. The system looks for inventory in the specified bin code. If the inventory is only available in a different bin, you will receive the “NOTHING TO HANDLE” message. You may need to either move inventory to the correct bin or change the bin code on the warehouse shipment to one that has available inventory [3].
  2. Review Breakbulk Settings: Since you have breakbulk turned on, verify that the “Allow Breakbulk” option is checked on the location card. This setting allows the system to break larger units of measure into smaller ones when creating picks. If this option is not enabled, the system may not suggest breaking down the inventory, leading to issues with item visibility on picks [1][4].
  3. Inspect Inventory Availability: Confirm that the inventory is indeed available in the correct unit of measure. If the system cannot find the item in the required unit of measure and breakbulk is not allowed, it will not create the pick. You can check the item card and the bin content to ensure that the inventory is available in the expected units [2][3].
  4. Use the Warehouse Summary Feature: When creating a pick, utilize the “Show warehouse summary” feature. This will provide visibility into the stock levels and any discrepancies that may be causing the issue. It can help clarify why certain items are not appearing on the pick [2].
  5. Adjust Default Shipment Bin Code: If you frequently encounter this issue, consider setting a default shipment bin code on the location. This will help ensure that the system uses the correct bin when creating warehouse shipments, reducing the likelihood of encountering the “NOTHING TO HANDLE” message [3].

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issues related to the “NOTHING TO HANDLE” messages and ensure that items appear correctly on picks in your warehouse operations.

Thanks for the reply Kristen. I’ve checked wit Copilot and found the same information that you did.

  1. Bin codes are correct
  2. Allow Breakbulk is check on the Bin Policies tab of the Location Card
  3. Inventory is available, although the problem usually occurs when inventory is low.
  4. Show Warehouse Summary? I’ve never seen this feature. Perhaps this is something available on newer versions of BC.
  5. The Shipment Bin is defined on the location card.
