Integration of Navision With Microsoft Fax

Does Server 2003 allow you to share the fax device? Microsoft Fax on XP & 2000 tell me they are not sharable devices. What am I missing? Do I need a 3rd party software that does this? -Thanks sorry if this has been answered before it’s just that i’ve had the flu for 5 days and i don’t have the energy to search.

Windows 2000/XP is a single workstation (not sharable) Fax Service. Windows Server 2003 Fax Service is (exactly?) the same Fax Service but with the possibility to be shared - hence the name: Microsoft Shared Fax.

I tried the integration with 2003 server shared fax, as you can see from my previous post. My current summary is: If you set the No print status on the report, it works in 2.6 and 3.7. I nonetheless decided to go with a commercial fax server (Tobit Faxware 7) because of two reasons: - you can define a template for faxes in Faxware, and you cannot do that with the windows shared fax server. Since our reports are designed to be printed with our letter paper, to have our adress appear in the same document faxed, we need this feature. The only alternative would have been to have the users send the faxes with a cover sheet, which is not desirable imho, at least the faxware solution is simpler - you can tell Faxware the fax-number by including it printed in the report surrounded by special chars. That is far easier than using APIs and programming in C/AL. Regards, Stephan

In our case, we actually moved from Tobit FaxWare to Microsoft Shared Fax.

I set up windows 2003 server to be our fax server. This pc is just to send out faxes nothing else. I setup the Shared Fax feature. The other workstations can connect to the faxserver (MS Server2003). Everthing seems to work fine but when you try to print to it the Fax wizard appears & when you click “next” to enter the phone # n’such I get an error saying “Fax server information cannot be retrieved. The fax wizard will now close” The setup seems to be fine and everything goes according to plan until this happens. I’m not trying for fax from Navision yet. I was just trying so fax anything. Any ideas on what I may have missed or has anyone else received this error? Thanks Microsoft Server 2003 Enteprise Edition

Maybe it could be a lack of user access to the Shared Fax device. Have you checked the permissions? Try to assign the Everyone group with Full Control and see if it works. What happens if you open the Fax Console on the Client workstations? Do you also get an error message there?

Thanks for your help… The Fax console on the client opens and at the bottom it says “All fax printers are inaccessable” I log into the server as administrator. I have checked off every permission I could find. When I do a search for network printers - it does not show, but when I type in the printer path directly “\Faxserver1\Faxserver” the login dialog box appears and it logs in fine. I tried two different workstations - 1 running XP & 1 running 2000 server. - I feel like it’s 1 thing I missed but I can’t figure it out.

Maybe you know this but I can’t remember anything else: When you log into the server as admin you must check the permission in 2 different places - silly, I know… Microsoft… 1) Control Panel, Printers: assign Everyone with Full Control. 2) Go to the Fax Service Manager in Start->Programs->Accessories->Communication->Fax (you can also reach it from the printer properties). Now right-click on the first item in the tree view - should be Fax (Local) - and go to properties. There is a different setup for Security, with more specific options. Have you seen this before? Give Everyone all the permissions and test it. I hope this solves your problem. If it does, you can then start “downgrading” the permissions into a secure, functional setup.

This does not solve the problem. I had that all configured. I have given permission to everyone & their mother. I have checked on more boxes than Santa. I’m gonna have to chalk this one up to life sucking & then you die. Windows 2003 Server - Bah Humbug!

Cheer up! Remember the holidays! Don’t let Microsoft put you down [:D] Maybe if you try it again from the top, you will find the problem. One more question: what about the server itself? Can you fax from the server? Is the fax device working locally on the server and only client accesses are failing?

I can fax from the server. It received faxes fine too. I can find the fax printer on the fax server from the clients. The fax dialog box appears but it cannot access the fax service. It’s really starting to peeve me - lol. I only have the file & print server roles active. Do I need to impliment remote access service too? What services/roles are necesary for fax sharing? Maybe I’ll just reinstall & start fresh! Thanks for your help.

Has anyone had a provlem conecting to the server? I tried all? \Server\Fax ip\Fax IP \server\ Server.domain.com

This is a topic I haven’t seen for a while. As you can see by the previous posts that this service was driving me up the wall last X-mas. No matter what I did I could not get it to work. The problem was solved in 5 minutes when I (instead) installed a 3rd party fax solution. In my case Symantec WinFAX Pro. Other use Tobit [8D]& some lucky ones have Microsoft Fax[B)] working like it should. Long story short - I have never been able to figure out why I had connection problems[|)] & keeping my sanity prevents me from going down that road again[:D] But here’s a useful link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325807 & here’s more shared fax fun: http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&na=88&View=en-us&qu=shared+fax+service
