Extending the life of Dynamics GP

Hi everyone, I’ve been wondering how others are approaching the challenge of extending the life of their GP ERP systems, since end of life was announced. With technology changing fast, how are you managing to keep these systems up to date and running smoothly without a full system overhaul? Any tips or strategies you’ve found useful?

You need to make sure you look at ISV products. The ISV community are still actively developing new functionality.

I know that my GP Power Tools adds many modern features. The latest build added “No code/Low Code” customisation to GP and the ability to add fields to windows via code, no modified or alternate windows needed.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for sharing that – sounds like GP Power Tools is doing some great work! We work with a lot of field service companies and have seen how important it is to extend the life of GP and SL systems. We have a platform that integrates with both to support their operations.

Do you typically work with any field service companies yourself?

Best,
Trevor

Hi Trevor

As an ISV I rarely get to see what other modules are installed at my customers. I know that many do have Field Service but don’t have any specifics.

David

Hi David,

That makes sense.

Just for context, we (FieldConnect) help field service companies extend the capabilities of GP and SL with tools for scheduling, dispatching, mobile work order management, etc.

Do you ever partner with B2B SaaS companies or resell software like ours?

Would it make sense to have that discussion?

Thanks,
Trevor

Hi Trevor

As an ISV I only sell my own products.

Hi David,

Thanks for the clarity—totally understand!

If you happen to know of any VARs or consultants who work with field service companies or help extend the life of GP and SL systems, I’d love an introduction or recommendation.

Regardless, it’s great connecting with you. I’ll definitely keep GP Power Tools in mind for our clients who need that kind of functionality.

Appreciate your time and insights!

Thanks again,
Trevor

That’s a great question. Many companies are facing the same challenge with GP after the end-of-life news. From what we’ve seen, there are a few practical approaches:

  • Stabilize & Extend – keep GP running with selective customizations, integrations, and Power BI for reporting.

  • Step-by-Step Modernization – move certain functions (like finance or reporting) into Business Central/D365 while GP continues for the rest.

  • Upgrade Path Planning – create a roadmap for full transition later without disrupting daily work.

We worked with a field service company in a similar way, starting with reporting and integrations, then gradually moving them into Business Central when they were ready. Might be worth considering something along those lines.
