I am a new bee to this product. Just joined a start up company, experienced with about 10 implementation in AX and NAV. The systems administrator here left and there are no knowledgeable resource to clear my doubts. May I expect some help on following questions?
When AX is purchased, what are the contents we receive with it? Is it a packaged product with CDs/DVDs for installations or we download software and just a paper license is given?
Does AX environment covers the license for Visual Studio?
Does it cover license for SQL Server 2005/2008 (used for AX purposes only)?
I have referred some documents from Microsoft regarding licensing. But these points were not clear for me or I did not understand.
1 → We had AX CD for the installations. License will come in a mail. I’m not sure about the paper license thing.
2 → It doesn’t cover license for Visual Studio.
3 → License for SQL wil also not be there. But, there will be prerequisites dump. If you already have the prerequisites dump copied in your system, you will have to run .net framework 3.5 ans MS SQl server before installing AX.
The mail in which AX License file is sent will contain the development codes for different layers( BUS, VAR, CUS layers) amd some other external codes too,
If am wrong in any of these points, please correct me too
Case: I purchased AX 2009 for 30 users for my customer. I downloaded AX from partner source. I have a SQL Server 2005 standard edition CD with 5 user license. I now go to the client’s place and install SQL then other required s/w and finally AX Server. I also install AX clients in 30 desktop computers.
Question: Is there a requirement for SQL license here separately? Or the AX users would cover that?
When you place SQL order along with Dynamics Ax, you get SQL runtime license at discounted price. Subsequently you will receive SQL media. This CD will have embedded license key. In other words, when you install software from this CD, you will not get the option to enter license key.
The only condition when going down this route is that SQL license would only be used for purposes of Dynamics Ax.
Coming to your query, SQL user license and Ax user license are mutually exclusive (i.e. separate). Therefore I believe you will will have to purchase SQL user license.
