Dynamics 365 ecommerce integration method

I am looking for clarification on the new method of ecommerce integration to third party platforms that was introduced in Dynamics 365 Operations as they have deprecated the Retail for ecommerce integration with SharePoint that existed in AX 2012. We are planning to implement a new solution but unclear about the intended capability that was added. This new method is described in an overview here: https://ax.help.dynamics.com/en/wiki/e-commerce-platform/

The question is whether they just simplified the connection to third party ecommerce platforms (like Magento) or if it was intended to embed Dynamics 365’s own ecommerce functions and controls into a CMS platform like Umbraco or DNN which does not already have shopping cart functionality?

They provide a working ASP.NET storefront in the Retail SDK which seems to indicate that it would not need a platform that has ecommerce functionality but rather an ASP.NET platform (like Umbraco or DNN) to embed its own shopping cart, mini cart, login, etc. which would then give you full CMS and integrated ecommerce functionality. Since we are starting from scratch I am looking to take full advantage of the new integration feature but just not sure how these pieces fit together. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason
