Apologies I have just re read my post and realise I sound like my Dad did twenty years ago. Aaaaaagh
Dude most of us “poms” can’t stand the bloody Minogue sisters (although Kylie has a nice ass)… And that bloody Holly Valance…why won’t she just bugger off!! But i feel a big thank you must go your way for letting us have Natalie Imbruglia… woman of my dreams!!
The problem is that nothing Kylie does now can ever make up for what she inflicted upon us at the start of her pop career. Duets with Jason Donavon bring back particuarly painful memories…
But if it wasnt for our Soapie rejects what would you guys do for your pantomimes. Worse than the Kylie and Jason duet surely was Craig McLachlans attempt at pop super stardom. The dichotomy of the British Music Industry where Radiohead, Fat Boy Slim etc can be mingled with S Club 7, the Singing Budgie (aka Kylie) and Terry Wogans Floral Dance will forever remain a mystery.
AAAAGGGHHHHH!!! I’d blocked Terry Wogans floral dance out my mind for years and now it has come back to haunt me!!!
A low point in 20th Century culture but curiously a number one in the UK.
uh! würg Kylie is artificially!! Natalie is nice ;)) I hope I will never sound like my father ggg Me is bor(g)n '79 ! But - however - the all time best are: - Phil Collins (he is an old man in music) - Madonna (the only “Lady” I know in music) - Beatles (you hear the every summer ;)) - R.E.M. Good topic! I must say we Aussies usually bag poms at most things, but you certainly can belt out good tunes. I am hoping that the new Oasis album is better than their last 2. I feel there is few better bands than Oasis when they are at their best. As I say I hope they are back on track. Regards Phil Dawson
And most times they deserve it. But you are right when it comes to music the Poms leave other countries including the US for dead with regards sheer quality. Oasis seemed to have been too caught up in their own hype and forgot to make good music. Certainly their first two albums still sound staggering even years afterwards which has got to be a sign of good music.
We’ll have to wait and see about Oasis’ new album. Apparently Liam has written some of the songs… but i’m not believing that myself. Last year i went to see Leeds United v Chelsea (they’re two football teams from the english premier league in case you didn’t know) and i saw Liam Gallagher getting a takeaway pizza! I personally think no guitar player (which i am) should be without Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. Also love bands like The Stone Roses. Although they are no more the licks and riffs of John Squire still rock to this day!! Don’t forget the Happy Mondays and especially the lyrics they conjure up in songs like Kinky Afro…listen to it for a classic line!! Then you have the Beatles and there best album in my opinion was Revolver…but everyone has their own opinion… Personally i’m excited about the new Coldplay album. Their new single has just been released over here and it seems to pick up where Parachutes (their last album) left off…which is good. We mustn’t also forget Brit bands like Badly Drawn Boy, Radiohead, Feeder, Stereophonics… but the americans haven’t done a bad job with bands like Ben Folds Five, Matchbox20, Sum41, Greenday etc…
Interestingly when ever I employed developers and consultants, I always used to find out their favourite music, and that generally influenced how I teamed them up together, and how I decided who would work with which client. So it is an interesting topic to have on NOLUG. Beetles and the Stones don’t count, since everyone likes them. Floyd were the most important factor. So the first question Barrett/Waters/Gilmore. The Barrett’s know their stuff, but just don’t get out of bed until 10.00, so they are limited in ability to visit clients even during their waking moments. The Gilmore’s don’t seem to be detail oriented, just loud and fast, and the results are generally short lived. So I generally prefered the Water’s fans as they seem to have the right balance as a consultant. Then there is Vivaldi vs Techno/Garage. These are the real programmers, and most of the good programmers like either Vivaldi or Techno/Garage, but generally not both. I once made a deal with one of my programmers that I would listen to one of his Garage albums, and he would listen to The Four Seasons, to see who could last the longest, neither of us made it to the end. Then there are Project Managers, they always have some favourite band that no one has ever heard of. It is their own little private thing. They add that level of personalization to each and every project they manage in the same way. The trainers, and the delivery teams, generally like all kinds of music, and really have trouble telling you their favourites. They like groups like The Doors, Genesis, U2, etc. They like classical music, but could not tell the difference between Mozart and Beethoven. They are able to listen to things like Back Street Boys and Brittney Spears without actually feeling any kind of physical pain. To them it sounds the same as hearing a client say “…But my old system had that as standard…” Then there are managers, they do not have favourite music, just favourite radio stations, since they don’t have time to think about music, and can only listen to music in the gaps whilst driving and waiting for the next call on the phone. Then remember, when you put a team together, the first question to each is “If you had to listen to one album all day long, repeatedly, what would it be.” The second is to then get them all to find one album that they all could listen to from begining to end. Then you will find who can work together. Its probably nonsense, but its also fun. PS: you Aussies out there that keep refering to Pohms (correct spelling by the way). They only become Pohms once the come to Australia. POHM was written on their shirts when they first came out…Prisoner Of His Majesty. But that’s off the point, and I am trying to stay on topic here. _________________________ David Singleton Navision Consultant since 1991 dmks22@comcast.net___________
I know its off topic but its too big to ignore. Sorry to tell you that it is Poms not Pohms because the version related is an urban myth. The true derviation of the word Pom is from the word Pomegranate. The immigrants that came were not all convicts, as all Australians will tell you, but due their fair skin which was more used to the northern climate they tended to burn when they arrived in Oz. Hence their faces were red and round and resembled a pomegranate. So I suppose strictly it should be pome not Pommy but definitely Pom. POM has sometimes been confused as short for Prsioner of His Majesty, Port of Melbourne (where some arrived), Pompey (for Portsmouth where a lot left), or Permit of Migration. All are close but no cigar. Its a subject close to all Australians hearts
I disagree, but that’s not important, I have also heard the Pomegranate story, but never heard the one about Melbourne. In any case, all the derivations of Pom/Pohm do require the fundamantal basis that the person of English extraction is a Pom/Pohm only once they have been in Australia for a significant period of time. In the end all these legends are really what you make of them, and which one the most people believe. _________________________ David Singleton Navision Consultant since 1991 dmks22@comcast.net___________
Greetings to all of you. Its an interesting topic that Mr. Singleton has brought up about POMS. I was born in Oz and my parents are english. My father (who professes to know everything about everything), told me both reasons as outlined by Mr. Singleton & Mr. Godfrey. As a kid of english parents growing up in Oz, I use to get a lot of stick from my mates about being a POM, so I used the first explanation to make them sound stupid - because they never knew the origins of the word. I would say that it depends how you spell it and thats that!! Getting back to the actual topic at hand, Phil Dawson was right on with his comments about British music - it is the best. Which is just as well because when it comes to anything else important (sport), they are certainly lacking! Mind you, saying that, the women are OK! However, I would say one of my favourite artists ever, was American … Billy Joel. But I also like what Paul Wellers done solo and of course with The Jam, Oasis, Blur. Other favourite artists include Sheryl Crow (DEFINATELY A BABE!), Crowded House, INXS and a little garage, like Craig David.
My top tunes:- Tracy Chapman - Fast Car Goo Goo Dolls - Iris Sheryl Crow - Strong Enough Don Henley - Boys of Summer Thats about it at the moment
Goo Goo Dolls’ track Iris is absolute quality. Good choice fella!!
