Attain 3.70 Server on Win2000prof?

Good morning everyboy, Im quite shure that this question should be mentioned in any other thread - but a 1-hour-search of mine didn´t bring up any result (exept discussions about mission-critical servers, upholstered for 100+ users). So here it is: Is it possible to run Attain 3.70 Server on a Win 2000pro (or XP pro) Workstation properly? Only 7 clients are to be handled by this machine. I don´t believe that I´m forced to buy another server-OS (currently Financials-Server 2.60 is running on NT4Server (PIII-450 [8)]) which is also DC, Fileserver and erverything else. So Upgrade to an additional “server” dedicated for Navision should be a great improvement - even if it´s got no server-os) Thank´s in advance.

I believe it should run OK. The workstation versions of Windows (2000/XP) have a limitation regarding the number of maximum network connections (it’s either 10 or 20, I don’t remember). This could have an influence on the success of your setup but for 7 clients it should be OK. I have previously run a Navision test-server in a Windows XP Professional machine. It was only simultaneously used by 3 people at the same time and there were no problems.

Suppose it will depend on whether you would want to run the SQL version, in which case it would probably not work as SQL Server 2000 requires a server version of Windows 2000. The only version that would work on Professional would be the MSDE version which is really not recommended for a production environment (5 user limit and 2GB data limit if I remember correctly). C/Side DB should not present any problems. As Nelson states, the Professional version is indeed limited to 10 concurrent connections. Meint

I think we need to make it clear also the 10 concurrent connections limit does not mean you can have 10 users connect to it. We are talking about TCP connection, which, each user can easily use more than 1.

Thank you very much for the quick answers. Actually I don´t know if I should give it a try. The WinXPpro machine was suposed to act as a “fileserver” (German: Verzeichnisfreigaben) too. I believe the usage of Attain AND opening an Excel-sheet (from same machine) will use 2 TCP connections. Is there some kind of upgrade-kit for WinXP that increases the connection limit to perhaps 25 concurrent connections? Or is this upgrade called “Windows Server 2003” ? (Perhaps I can use this Forum-Information to convince my boss of an investment in Windows Small Business Server 2003 :-)) ) Ralf

I believe XP has similar connection limitation. Doing development work under XP/2000Pro are fine. But I would strongly suggest a server OS for any true network usage. It is soooooo easy to hit that 10 connection limit. With the time you spend to try to work around the problem, which, I believe cost money too, your boss could have spend it on getting the Server OS…
