An error occurred when opening Report Designer. A supported version of Visual Studio could not be found.

The subject of this post is the error that I receive when clicking on Layout for a report.

Installed on development pc:
Windows 7
NAV 2009 SP1 6.0(RC02) R2(6.00.32146)
Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express
Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express
VS Express for Web (2012)

In the past I was able to click on Layout and develop rdlc reports. Recently I installed both Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express and VS Express for Web (2012). Since installing these two, I have not been able to design rdlc reports.

Could installation of VS Express for Web (2012) have caused problems? The web page blogs.msdn.com/…/visual-studio-2010-and-ssrs-rdlc-reports-in-nav-2009.aspx is of some interest, but it doesn’t address existence of 2012 on a computer.

Is there a problem with having 2012 installed? I need 2012 installed for other development work.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

I feel Vs 2012 is not supported to this version of Nav 2009 Sp1.

I did not expect 2012 to be supported. I was hoping that NAV2009 would continue using 2008 even when 2012 is installed.

Hi Django,

I have both 2008, 2010 and 2012 of Visual Studio installed. And it works fine - but it’s the full versions (not web developer) - although web should be enough.

NAV 2009 uses VS 2008 and NAV 2013 uses VS 2010, as you know.

Thanks Erik for confirming that NAV 2009 should still work with 2008 even after 2010 and 2012 are installed.

May I suggest that you simply try to reinstall VS 2008? I remember when I installed VS 2010, then couldn’t use the RDL report designer. I just had to reinstall VS 2008 again (which didn’t change anything in the way VS 2010) worked. Except now report designer worked again.

Thanks again Erik. Yes it was as simple as doing a repair on “Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition”. I am back in business.
