Has Navision forgotten about use developers? Bill Gates has not.(When it comes to developer tools I mean.) I have been sat here creating some DataPorts in Navision Development environment. AND ITS HARD WORK! For example getting some properties I must press two hot keys. Setting ‘Debug active’ there are no Hot keys, so I have to run around with the mouse all over the place. My Question is How can I make my life easier. Does any one know if there is a developer version of Navision Client? A’m not knocking the language but just the environment am working in. No, there’s nothing such as a developer version of the client. There’s just ONE development environment for Navision Attain/Financials which is part of every Navision client. You can access to it if you have the appropriate licence and user rights. The development environment has actually not much changed since NF 1.10 (that’s when I started with Navision) And from what I have read on this board Navision is not going to put any effort in improving the dev. environment because they claim that they’re selling an ERP and not a language. Which I can understand to some degree. But yes the IDE sucks if you’re comparing it to all the niceties you get in VB, Delphi and others … So if there’s any Navision Development Partner out here looking for a new product idea. A good debugger, IDE for Navision would certainly sell. And if the IDE is just fantastic Navision A/S could be your client … ###### tarek_demiati@ureach.comEdited by - Tarek Demiati on 2001 Nov 14 16:13:52
i can’t agree more, probably they make the interface suck so that our customers won’t even think of picking up c/al? or else we would definitely have a hard time dealing with all the changes that the customer will make to the system, because modifications in navision is diffficult to maintain, right?
LOL Ok, but don’t make this sound worse than it is. If you instead of comparing Attain/Financials (this is really what we are talking about!) to VB or Delphi, then instead compare it to Great Plains or other ERP IDE. Even compare it to Axapta. My guess is that if this IDE is better, then we will see parts of it in the next new product, that they are working. Best regards, Erik P. Ernst, webmaster
Hello Tarek and Jordan. Thanks for taking the time to replying to my Posting. Its nice to know that there are Developers out there thinking on the same lines as me. I was being to think I was getting old at this game. I just cannot understand that argument Tarek about Navision just ‘selling an EPR and not a language’ the big success of Navision is all the third party add on’s and not just Navision on its own. A better developer environment means we don’t think twice about using other developer tools. How many of use are using Crystal reports or Trio for reporting and creating interfaces using VB, Delphi etc… May be this is a road that all new Navision developers go down before they final accept the situation stop gabbing and get down to work.
