Virtualize database server

I have an AX2012 R2 system running on MSSql 2008 R2 and have heard that my sql server should not be virtualized.

Why is this so?

It can be done, you just have to expect some performance degradation, especially in some configurations. Look at Planning, Implementing and Supporting SQL Server Virtualization - hopefully you can find more details there.
