Upgrading Navision Executable

Hi, I know this question has probably been asked before! Is upgrading just the Navision executable (say from ver 1.30 to ver 3.60) as simple as creating a backup then restoring it into the newer blank version [?] Does one not have to worry about the licence file. I am thinking about doing this for all our clients when ver 370 comes out and have various clients varying from version 1.30,2.01,2.60 & 3.10. Should this be a standard practice? Thanks [:)]

Nic, I don’t think the licence is an issue with just changing the executables. [?] However, when you upgrade an installation you must have the licence upgraded - for all the new objects in the newer system. Test it and see.

Ok, so its safe to assume that a backup-restore (old to new version) will not affect the licence at all because the objects are not changing. And when we choose to do a “proper upgrade” of the objects the licence would have to be changed for abvious reasons. This seems to me to be a good first step in maintaining a customers DB. Is this common practice? [:)]

Hi Nic, We went for a number of years with our clients on all various versions of Navision from 2 up to 2.60. When 3 then 3.60 came out and a few of our customers decided to upgrade to their databases to 3.60 it was brought to our attention by Navision that the upgrade of the executables for all clients should be a standard practice. Certainly with each release of executables there are new and better features that actually assists the developer more rather than giving the user direct advantages. We are still in the process of getting to this stage though but it does make sense. Sometimes the customers can be a stumbling block if their IT administrator isn’t too keen on rolling out 120 or so clients to all their desktops ! Good Luck Robin

From version 2.01 the license must not have passed the maintainance expiry date. So You need the maintainance in the license to upgrade exectables. That’s logical since Microsoft pust development into the executables. And it’s a good practice to allways upgrade. But be aware that there are changes sometimes that affect You solution. In 3.10 for example there was a change in defaults in dataports and in 3.60 there was a change in page brakes in reports. So You allways need to do some testing.

If you are upgrading from Financials to Attain you will also need to get an upgraded license from your NTR.

Thanks guys. [:)]
