Am a newbie. Trying to open a local database - coming up with this error. Says to make a change to the hosts & services file - but doesn’t say what change to make. Help?
Hi Catherine, it sounds like you are trying to enter text into the server name field when you should be entering the name into the Database Name field. Delete any text from the top field and click on the dots at the end of Database Name field and then open your local Database. This should do the trick. -Mike
Hi. Could also just be taht you need to define the name of the server (fx.: financials) to the host table and the service table to enable the client to find the way to engage. Oh…also check if the communications options are tcp/ip / netbios. Gert Lettorp
try pinging the server to see if you are connecting to the correct one
I am experiencing a similar problem. I have created a Navision Database Server on my PC running XP and have set all of the Host and Services entries. I can connect to this database from our test server running Server 2000 but cannot connect from any other PC in the network, I keep getting the following message:- The TCP/IP connections ‘host’ is not answering (TCP/IP error ECONNREFUSED). I can ping the host name from all network PCs, but can only connect from the test server even though I have set all of the network PC’s up the same as the server.
did you maybe play with services? Obviuously fromt he test server there is no problem, because there is only one set of Hosts and services, so its irrelevant what you put there. My guess is that you have assigned the service to the incorrect port on either the server or the clients. Don’t you have DHCP, that would be a much easier solution. Otherwise if you are still having problems, then remove ALL Navision related entries form services and hosts, and try connectiong to the IP address directly, i.e. instead of server name, use 192.168.1.99 (or what ever). hope this helps.
Dave this worked !!! Thank-you. When I typed the IP address in the Server Name I was able to connect to the database. I did everthing else you recommended and there still must be something wrong with what I am doing with using Host file resolution. I used port 2410/tcp, I do not know what range you can actually use but Micosoft recommend 2407 and 2408 so I thought I would be OK with 2410. It seems such a simple task to edit the Services and Host files to make everything work but I must be missing something, is there anything else I need to do to use the Host file entry instead of IP address?
Great to hear, alwasy good to hear from a satisfied customer [8D] If you are using DHCP, and have only one Navision server, OR if your users only need to connect to One NAvision server, then your best solution is to delete ALL references to the Navision server from ALL your hosts and services files, and just let DHCP take care of it. The only time you should be using services and hosts, is if you are connecting to multiple navision servers on one physical server. I do this normally in a developemnt environment, where as an NSC it is just easier to set up one big Navision server with all your clients DBs on it, and have multiple server services running.
Errm… Could you specify that a little bit? We have the same problem and it tells us something about the ‘host’ and ‘service’ tables underneath the “TCP/IP error ECONNREFUSED”. Where do I find the host table and the service table? From SQL 2005? From Dynamics Client? From Application Server Manager?
