I was looking for some insight regarding my current situation. My company uses Navision 2.6 server with the native database, and it’s working considerably well. We have almost no performance issues (this would seem logic, since we have only 60 users, although almost 20 work through Citrix Metaframe XP), except for those caused by poor programming. We also use a payroll system (Meta4), currently based on an Oracle 8i server. As we don’t have any experience with Oracle’s database server, and Navision can’t work with it, I was considering consolidating our databases to Microsoft SQL Server 2000, thus eliminating the need to maintain two different databases, especially one we don’t know. In this case, there would also be two employees (including myself) that already know how to work with SQL Server. This question goes to everyone out there who has faced the same monster, or at least a similiar-looking one. What do you think? Regards, Ulises Sasovsky
If You are about to build a lot of integration between Navision and the payroll system I would recommend You to: - Move to SQL - Use executables from 3.70 (with latest hotfix) - Learn about Navision Application Server (great for integration) - Learn how to use linked servers (to integrate with Oracle) in SQL. - By a lot more HW that You probably have today If Your system is running fine as today and there isn’t a lot of integration (maybe just an text file import for the posting of salaries) to do with payroll, then don’t bother moving to SQL. It’s allways a lot more work then expected, and SQL needs a lot more HW than native.
Thank you for your answer, it will be of great help. Regards, Ulises Sasovsky
Payroll integration with navision will not be advisable at this stage as your main business app(on navision is running) create an output file in say (ascii) from oracle based payroll and import a journal in navision and post and we happy as ever. regards, anuj
