I am looking for the tool that links up with the NAV Client Monitor that will help me set permissions… Is there anywhere i can download a trial, or does anyone know where on the CD this prog. is … I am a NAV Customer not Partner.
“I wouldn’t build a parser from scratch, though if you don’t have to. Client Monitor (granted, on the client machine and not the server) does the same thing as Profiler, and NAV has a tool to parse that and create permissions from it. In my experience it only gets you part of the way there, and then it is trial and error, but it’s a start. It used to (and may still be) available on the product DVD. I think the folder name was Tools or something. Sorry, it’s been a while.”
There used to be a tools cd, IIRC back in the 4.0 days, and I believe that’s where you’d find the permissions tool. Without access to client monitor though you can’t run it. I also believe the objects were in a partner restricted number range.
Is there a reason why you won’t get your partner involved for this task?
You know that is what I was thinking about too, and it seems you are lucking out because that works off of code coverage (I was sure it worked off of client monitor), which I don’t think you need a granule for.
The .fob that was compiled uses object ranges that i already have in use… so i used the .txt and modified to an object range that i was not using… My question is why would i be getting a "You dont have permission to run the ‘File,Import,Text’ System Contact your sys admin’ when i attempt to import something. What perms do i need to give myself to get around this error? I have ran NAV as an admin… i am a super user… mmmm any ideas on getting around this error
is there a way to compile the txt file to a fob so nav will accept the import w/o having to deal with more licensing
I imported in to the test database (just a backup of our existing DB) i am attempting to export and i get the same error You dont have permission to run the ‘File,Export,Text’ System contact admin… i also attempted to export out of the demo chronus db and i get the same error
You know, half an hour on the phone with your partner would have solved all of this. I don’t understand why you don’t get them involved.
You import the fob into a throwaway database. Then you renumber the objects in that throwaway database to available numbers. Then you export those objects in fob format. Then you import that fob file into your test database.
Another way could be to make a note of the object numbers, and export those objects from your test database, so you can restore those later. Then you import the permission tool into your test database, replacing all objects. Then you renumber those, and then you import the backup objects back in.
The next problem might be that the number you want to use is not in your license.
I dont have direct contact with our nav partner. The only way they will let me contact is thru email and sometimes it takes a very long time to respond. It really pisses me off but it seems there is nothing i can do. I m pushing for a new nav partner, but that seems higher ups will have to go thru the politics of that !
Thanks Matt, it was so obvious after i read that post!
