How to identify the CU1,CU2 and CU3 for AX 2012?

Hi,

Can any one tell me what is Cumulative update? and How to Identify that my system is in CU1 or CU2 or CU3?

and Say my AX is in CU2 and we did some customization and I want to upgrade it to CU3 is the kernal version changes?
