Does anyone have any idea how many kbps do we need to connect each remote user to our main server? We are trying to connect 32 simultaneous remote users from 4 different locations to our main server, one location with maximum 12 users and others with about 7 users. I understand if we use Citrix we will need less KBPS and connect users running win98 too. Is this correct? To make a VPN how many kbps do we need at main server and other locations? Jay
With Citrix, count on about 20kb per user to run fairly quickly. Anything less and you will see delays, particularly with printing.
If you are connecting directly, then plan on about 2-3 Meg per connection (what is that?, a T2 I guess), and I suppose a T3 at the server location, should do the job. …or… Use the money you would save in the first month of paying for these lines, and install Citrix. As John says you need an average of 20kb per user, but that is an average, allowing for idle users. For a single user you need at least 64k. The 20 k per user comes in at about 7-10 users. If your 32 users are actually 8 users per site, then you may get by with 128k per site, but 256k would be more comfortable. You should have at least 1Meg at the main site. Note that this all assumes that you are not printing, if printing, you need to look at a printing solution. Also Terminal Server is an option, it costs less (Obviously), but in a country like Romania where the internet is expensive, the reduced bandwidth requirement of Citrix will pay for it self.
Hello David, Thank you for your help. We will have printing in the remote locations 500 invoices per day. What kind of printing solution can we have? Regards, Jay
