Didn't see post so I'm asking - Change item type from BOM to Item after production exists

Okay so here is the ??? We’ve been manufacturing a Medical Device for a few years “Production Orders”. Now we want to change from “BOM” item type to “Item” Item type. There are no open Production Orders for this item number, but since there are existing production orders will not let us.

I’m trying many different ideas but would like if I had a simple quick reply - fix.

Go to the ended production orders for the item, delete them, change the item type.
