converting a combo box-single select dropdown, to a multi select

The above screenshot is from selecting the Edit option in Project management and accounting/Common/Projects/All projects.

My major concern is to convert the Primary Geographical Area and Secondary Geographical Area dropdowns (which are single select dropdowns now) to multi select. The type of both these fields is set to ComboBox which is not editable.

Could someone suggest me what can i do to make this change happen please.
