In AX 2012, can we create Service Order without mapping project ID to it, whenever I try to create service order system asks for Projects ID as a mandatory field.

Don’t quote me on this, but I think a project is required for a service order. All the costing and behind the scenes postings are done by project setups, so it’d make sense that a project is required.

That is correct, service sits on top of projects so they are related, you cannot create a service order without it being associated with a project because that is the tool used to capture costs etc.
