I was wondering if the allocations and account distributions can meet the same requirement in AX 2012. A little bit confused when to use allocation, and when to use account distribution in AX 2012.

Accountting distribution and allocation are completely different stuffs. Accounting distribution basically gives you a snapshot of how the ledgers entries will be created after posting document whereas for allocation, you create allocation rule and you set a parameter where a certain percent or amount of the concerned ledgers will be posted to other ledger as per setup.
